President
Anuva Agarwal
Brandon Lê
Do you intend to attend Tuesday’s elections meeting?
Yes.
Do you plan to be enrolled from May 2022 to May 2023?
Yes.
Have you reviewed the description of duties and expectations of your office?
Yes.
Have you communicated with current or previous holders of this executive position?
Yes.
Members of GPSG’s Executive are expected to attend GA meetings and Executive meetings. Can you commit to attending regularly scheduled meetings (typically weekly, Tuesday 6:30-8:30 PM ET)?
Yes.
Are you currently involved in GPSG?
Yes. Brandon is the current Director of Logistics and Operations and a regular participant in GPSG activities.
Do you have any non-GPSG experience as a student leader?
Yes. Brandon is the president of Duke F1RSTS, and serves on various university committees including the IT Advisory Council and the Duke Chapel Student Advisory Board.
Why are you interested in serving on GPSG exec? What about this office appeals to you?
“I feel this role is a continuation of all of the activites I’ve been involved with on campus. I’m fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes, how Duke operates and provides services and resources to its students, and how I as a student can provide meaningful input into those processes, as well as amplifying the voices of all students on campus. This is evidenced by my participation on several university-wide committees, such as the IT Advisory Council and the Duke Chapel Student Advisory Board. I’ve also been involved from the student group perspective, serving as the president of Duke F1RSTS to provide programming and advoacy for first-generation and low-income graduate and professional students. I’m extremely passionate to help facilitate these connections, and my involvement with these activities gives me the experience necessary to take our issues and conversations to the Duke administration.”
What current GPSG initiative are you most excited by, or what new initiative/goal would you like to focus on if elected?
“Our current GPSG executive board and standing committees have initiated many great projects and events. I recognize the quality of these initiatives and want to continue supporting and improving them. On the Student Affairs side, these include Buddy Lunch and GPSAW events, and on the Advocacy side, these include voter registration events, advocacy trips, and Lawyer Assistance Program. Finally, at a broader level, I intend to advance conversations around emergency funding for all graduate and professional schools, health insurance copays, stipends and costs-of-living, and environmental sustainability at an institutional level.”
The office of GPSG President arguably requires the most time and flexibility of all our offices in order to successfully engage with University bodies as is necessary to move GPSG actions and advocacy forward. Have you taken this into account when planning your academic schedule for next year? Can you commit to attending crucial activities such as meetings of the Board of Trustees standing committees?
“Yes, I have dedicated time to serve in this role for the upcoming year. I will attend and advocate for student concerns at all standing committee meetings.”

Vice President for Student Affairs
Christopher Kilner
Do you intend to attend Tuesday’s elections meeting?
Yes.
Do you plan to be enrolled from May 2022 to May 2023?
Yes.
Have you reviewed the description of duties and expectations of your office?
Yes.
Have you communicated with current or previous holders of this executive position?
No.
Members of GPSG’s Executive are expected to attend GA meetings and Executive meetings. Can you commit to attending regularly scheduled meetings (typically weekly, Tuesday 6:30-8:30 PM ET)?
Yes.
Are you currently involved in GPSG?
Yes. Christopher has previously served as the GPSG representative to the Academic Council and currently serves as chair of the Young Trustee Nominating Committee, having also served on YTNC previously.
Do you have any non-GPSG experience as a student leader?
Yes. Christopher served as Undergraduate Student Body President at The University of Scranton and is Treasurer of the Woape Foundation.
Why are you interested in serving on GPSG exec? What about this office appeals to you?
“As I begin to close out my career as a Graduate Student at Duke, I want to put what I have learned into action and give back to the Graduate and Professional Student Community that has given so much to me. I also want to develop my leadership and development experience as I prepare to enter the job market in a few years. After serving as Young Trustee Nominating Committee chair, I realized that I have found purpose in serving the Graduate and Professional student community.”
What current GPSG initiative are you most excited by, or what new initiative/goal would you like to focus on if elected?
“I believe that we should have active programming on the personal and community wide environmental impact of graduate and professional students, but focus more on the institutional drivers (rather than the focus that is too oft placed on individuals). So, what can departments do to reduce their environmental impact all while encouraging solutions from Graduate and Professional students. As for Student Affairs, I believe that GPSG should utilize programming funds to run tax preparation workshops with certified tax prep professionals.”
What GPSG Student Affairs event or responsibility has most impacted you as a Duke student? Is there a particular aspect of GPSG business you would most like to improve, or is there an event/activity/initiative you would like to make sure continues or begins this year?
“I strongly believe that we need to assist our fellow Graduate and Professional students with two things: (1) clarification and support around working second and/or part times jobs (run sessions on navigating this as a student to stay in compliance) as well as events especially for our community members who have children. As stated above, I also think that we need to run professional tax preparation sessions with certified professionals. Duke offers little support to our community in this regard.”

Do you intend to attend Tuesday’s elections meeting?
Unfortunately I will be unable to attend.
Do you plan to be enrolled from May 2022 to May 2023?
Yes.
Have you reviewed the description of duties and expectations of your office?
“Yes. I have familiarized myself with the requirements of this role through independent research and discussions with the current office holder.”
Have you communicated with current or previous holders of this executive position?
“Yes. I have spoken with five of the current members of the executive board in order to get a good idea of which role would be the best fit for me. From these conversations, I was able to narrow down my interest to two choices and I feel that my current and past leadership roles are the best fit for these positions.”
Members of GPSG’s Executive are expected to attend GA meetings and Executive meetings. Can you commit to attending regularly scheduled meetings (typically weekly, Tuesday 6:30-8:30 PM ET)?
Yes.
Are you currently involved in GPSG?
“Yes. I have attended more than three GA meetings and several GPSG events throughout the school year.”
Do you have any student leadership experience outside of GPSG?
“Yes. I have direct experience planning events and social activities this year as Social Chair and a member of my section’s cabinet. Examples of events I have planned and executed include Spring Time Social and A Picnic in the (Duke) Gardens.”
Why are you interested in serving on GPSG exec? What about this office appeals to you?
“I am interested in serving on GPSG because I’d like to increase my level of engagement outside of the Fuqua community. I am interested in doing work that is impactful and influential and welcome the chance to deepen my connection with the larger university. I’d like to strengthen GPSG’s cross graduate school reach and presence by establishing innovative programming and events. “
What current GPSG initiative are you most excited by, or what new initiative/goal would you like to focus on if elected?
“I would like to focus on incorporating more wellness/ fitness initiatives into GPSG programming and I’d like to increase engagement among all of the graduate school programs, for example, increase participation and engagement from the Graduate Nursing Program. “
What GPSG Student Affairs event or responsibility has most impacted you as a Duke student? Is there a particular aspect of GPSG business you would most like to improve, or is there an event/activity/initiative you would like to make sure continues or begins this year?
“I have been most impacted by the Ladies Luncheon- Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser hosted by the Director of Events Programming. I felt that the event was well done–the speakers were accomplished, insightful, and thought provoking. • Fitness or wellness competition: a monthly steps or activity challenge via an app like Fitbit among individuals or graduate programs. The top three competitors can be eligible to enter a raffle to win various Duke gear items. If a group competition among graduate schools, the winning school can have a GPSG-hosted happy hour at J.B. Duke or a free boutique fitness class for the first sixty registrants. • Monthly group fitness classes open to all graduate students: explore a partnership with local gyms such Orange Theory Fitness or Sweat Lab. • Workout buddy system: I’ve found it challenging to resume regular activity during my graduate study program, and perhaps others do too. Creating a system for matching up any graduate student with a workout buddy pursuing similar wellness/ fitness goals could address three potential barriers to working out regularly: time, accountability, and motivation. It also allows the opportunity to be social at the same time! • Guided campus walking tours: present an ongoing opportunity for everyone to explore the other parts of campus within a group. Monthly or quarterly group happy hours or socials with two to three graduate programs at a time. For example, in the month of November, hosting a Business School- School of Medicine – Policy School cross-program mixer. In addition to beginning a new initiative, I’d ensure that the Buddy Lunch program, began by the current VP of Student Affairs continues and is expanded in the next academic year.”

Why are you interested in serving on GPSG exec? What about this office appeals to you?
“I’ve been working on the DEI committee of the GPSG over the past year and I feel I am poised well to move into this leadership position. My passion truly is improving graduate student life through the continued improvement of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice on our campus, and I would like to continue doing so in an official capacity.”
What current GPSG initiative are you most excited by, or what new initiative/goal would you like to focus on if elected?
“My main new goal (of others!): develop relationships between the DEI committee leadership and admin, faculty, and students poised in DEI leadership positions across campus. I believe that building these strong networks (while continuing to pass resolutions and work on improving campus in the meanwhile) will result in greater power for the DEI committee in advocating for student needs, as well as a greater understanding of what students do need and how we can work with admin and faculty to meet those needs.”
Are you engaged in GPSG’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee? Do you have any external experience advancing DEI initiatives in academic, professional, or community settings?
“Yes! In fact, I ran for this same position last year and lost, which I count as fortunate, because I was able to join the committee as a member and learn how the GPSG operates, develop leadership skills, write and present resolutions, and begin developing connections for the committee that will be beneficial as we continue to expand our role.

Do you have any non-GPSG experience as a student leader?
Yes. Kyle has been a boy scout leader and high school band section leader.
Why are you interested in serving on GPSG exec? What about this office appeals to you?
“I want to include students with disabilities into diversity events and programs.”
What current GPSG initiative are you most excited by, or what new initiative/goal would you like to focus on if elected?
“I know this might be out of scope for this position but I want to try to start diversity programs at Duke for students with invisible disabilities and help them get through university with as little issues as possible; even a stuttering program would have been very helpful for me when I was learning how to be a Undergrad.”
Are you engaged in GPSG’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee? Do you have any external experience advancing DEI initiatives in academic, professional, or community settings?
No.
Briefly, what would you most like to communicate to students about yourself or your candidacy?
“My name is Kyle Williams, I am a soon to be second-year M.S. medical physics student here at Duke, and I have struggled with my stutter for my entire academic career. I want to help make Duke as accommodating and welcoming to new students as possible, and one group of students is being left out. Students with disabilities are often forgotten about and not included in diversity programs. Duke has a bad history with this as well, as they were sued in 2020 by a blind student for discrimination. I know Duke is better than this and I hope whoever is elected for this position will include these students because I know firsthand how they are excluded.”

Are you currently involved in GPSG’s Climate Crisis Committee? Do you have any experience advocating for environmental stewardship, conservation, and/or sustainability outside GPSG?
“I have extensive background in both advocating for environemntal issues (bringing rideshare to my undergraduate institution is one example), as well as programming environmentally conscious projects at the Nicholas School and in my undergraduate work. Yes.
Have you communicated with current or previous holders of this executive position?
N/A; this position is new, so there are no previous holders. However, Meech drafted the description of this position for the bylaws amendment which created it.
Members of GPSG’s Executive are expected to attend GA meetings and Executive meetings. Can you commit to attending regularly scheduled meetings (typically weekly, Tuesday 6:30-8:30 PM ET)?
Yes.
Are you currently involved in GPSG?
Yes. Meech currently serves on the GPSG Secretariat and is Chair of the Climate Crisis committee.
Do you have any non-GPSG experience as a student leader?
Yes.
Why are you interested in serving on GPSG exec? What about this office appeals to you?
“I would love to serve on GPSG executive to continue the work I have been doing in my capacity as Secretariat. I believe climate science and environmental advocacy should have a voice on GPSG executive and is an excellent way to include the knowledge and skills of the Nicholas School in broader student government. Holding a Director position will give more weight to the work we do in Climate Crisis Committee and will ideally open more doors to administration and to university committees. Furthermore, this position equalizes GPSG at Duke with other student government positions at other universities. I am interested in filling this position to continue my work with UNC Environmental Affairs and with University committees I am already connected with.”
What current GPSG initiative are you most excited by, or what new initiative/goal would you like to focus on if elected?
“I would like to focus on establishing mental health resources for students experiencing ecoanxiety and develop programs to reduce Campout waste. “
Are you currently involved in GPSG’s Climate Crisis Committee? Do you have any experience advocating for environmental stewardship, conservation, and/or sustainability outside GPSG?
“I chair the Climate Crisis Committee and have been responsible for every resolution for the spring semester. I was also responsible for the connections with UNC Environmental Affairs, Duke Student Affairs, EJ Campus Committee, Campus Sustainability Committee, and furthering communication with ACIR. As for outside work, I have been on student government at every university I have attended with the exception of Stanford University in high school. At UCLA, I advocated for improved curriculum at the intersection of biology and geology. By directly speaking to administrators and facilitating communications between faculty and students, I was able to request edits to two class structures and cross list both of them for students studying the intersection between natural and physical sciences. During the pandemic, I was a member of the Curriculum and Volunteer Committees on my Student Government at Northwestern Law. Through this work, I successfully petitioned to expand the environmental curriculum in my program by 10 classes and incorporated environmental elements into orientation programming. Furthermore, I was able to find remote sustainability-focused volunteer opportunities and engage around 40% of my class in these programs during the pandemic. I was also able to complete a policy analysis piece on the recent Illinois Clean Energy Jobs Act and speak to local politicians about implications of equity in clean energy. My advocacy now is primarily legal, and I have spoken at 3 academic conferences about my work in grassroots movements for environmental rights. I am continuing this work currently by writing a policy to protect vulnerable ecosystems in my home state of California. This policy will be introduced to a California governing body in 2023 and will be one of the first policies of its kind in the state. I have devoted my life to advocating for equitable conservation in American law and policy, and I believe the Director of Environment and Sustainability is the logical next step to further my professional development.”

“I have had the privilege of serving as Director of Finance for the Graduate & Professional Student Government this past year. The Director of Finance role carries a substantial responsibility, which I have wholeheartedly and passionately taken on this past year. Beyond being passionate in the role, one must be organized and detail-oriented, have clear communication skills, understand finance and budget allocations, work well in a team setting, be open and willing to learn new skills, and most importantly one must be committed to serving graduate students. My experience in this role and my continued passion for finance and serving my fellow graduate students will allow me to carry GPSG through another successful year.”
What current GPSG initiative are you most excited by, or what new initiative/goal would you like to focus on if elected?
“I am excited for the initiatives that were developed this past year to continue to flourish despite a transition of leadership. I look forward to expanding the Student Affairs portfolio to provide more support for graduate student-wide events and student groups. I would like to streamline the process of application for funding and improve the timeliness of payments to vendors, reimbursements for students, and transfers for student groups.”
